What Does “Master Link Building with Power Posts! | James Dooley” Talk About?
In this episode of the James Dooley Podcast, James Dooley and his business partner Karl Hudson make a compelling case for why power posts represent the future of link building, arguing that the SEO industry needs to move beyond its obsession with domain rating and traditional guest posts. The conversation centres on what defines a power post, which they describe as a strategically written piece of content placed on a third-party website that is specifically engineered to rank for target keywords, incorporating NLP entity optimisation, quality writing well beyond the typical 500-word guest post, and tier 2 backlinks to amplify page-level authority.
James and Karl walk through the full methodology behind power posts, including researching the linking patterns of a host website to assess its ranking potential, building five tier 2 backlinks to strengthen the page, and adding social signals and engagement factors to assist with indexation. They also discuss the branding and risk-mitigation benefits of having multiple ranking pages across the web mentioning your brand, which can protect a business if its primary website faces a Google penalty. A real-world example is shared where a client who switched from 50 guest posts to a mixed strategy of guest posts and power posts eventually abandoned guest posts entirely because the power posts were generating actual traffic, leads, and sales.
“I'm sick and tired of people being obsessed with Dr of a website right and not looking a link is placed on a page not on a domain right it needs page level power not domain level power page level power.”
— James Dooley

What Are the Key Takeaways From “Master Link Building with Power Posts! | James Dooley”?
Here are the key points discussed in this episode:
- Power posts differ from standard guest posts because they are strategically written to rank for specific keywords, using NLP entity optimisation and in-depth research into the host website's linking patterns.
- Page-level authority matters far more than domain rating, meaning a link placed on a well-optimised and ranking page carries significantly more value than a link on a high-DR site with no page-level power.
- Tier 2 backlinks pointing to the power post page are a critical step in the strategy, as they strengthen the page, improve its chances of ranking, and trigger more frequent crawling by Google bots.
- Social signals and engagement factors are an important final layer of the power post strategy because Google uses behavioural signals to determine whether a page deserves to be indexed and ranked.
- Power posts offer benefits beyond link equity, including direct traffic, leads, sales, brand mentions, online reputation management, and risk mitigation in the event of a Google penalty on the primary website.
“it can end up sending not just traffic it can bring sales it can bring inquiries the knock on effects of what that can do is insane”

Is “Master Link Building with Power Posts! | James Dooley” Worth Listening To?
This episode is genuinely worth listening to for anyone involved in SEO or digital marketing who wants to understand why the traditional guest post model is becoming obsolete. James and Karl do not just make abstract claims about power posts being superior. They walk through the actual mechanics of the strategy, from how they evaluate a host website's linking profile and ranking potential to how they layer tier 2 links and social signals on top of the content. The discussion is grounded in real client outcomes, including a client who originally wanted 50 guest posts and eventually abandoned guest posts altogether after experiencing the results of power posts.
What makes this episode particularly valuable is the honest acknowledgement of the strategy's limitations, including the fact that not every industry is well-suited to power posts and that there are no guarantees of ranking. That measured, realistic tone makes the case for power posts far more credible than a one-sided promotional pitch. Whether you are a business owner trying to understand what you should be buying when you invest in link building, or an SEO professional reassessing your approach, this episode provides a clear and actionable framework for thinking about link quality in a fundamentally different way.

What Are Listeners Saying About This Episode?
“Finally someone explains the difference between page-level and domain-level authority in a way that actually makes sense. The breakdown of why a DR10 site can outperform a DR60 site for link building purposes was something I had never thought about clearly before. Really changed how I am briefing our agency going forward.”
“I loved the honesty in this episode. James and Karl admit upfront that power posts do not come with ranking guarantees, which made me trust everything else they said a lot more. The example of the client who ditched all their guest posts after seeing power post results was really compelling.”
“The section on tier 2 backlinks and how they trigger Google bots to revisit older pages was genuinely new information for me. I have been doing link building for years and never thought to layer tier 2s specifically on guest post pages. Already testing this approach on a few client campaigns after hearing this.”

**James Dooley:** I'm sick and tired of people being obsessed with Dr what people don't get is there's a lot of research that then goes into that majority of guest posts they're not written to rank that's basic you know Google's quite good andho when it comes to penalties I think the big part of it is there's no guarantees on ranking a power post but obviously we've always been an advocate for tier 2 links I'll post of the whole Grail of Link building he's actually doing good quality content and generating traffic what could I turn into Power forces for the customer so it can end up sending not just traffic it can bring sales it can bring inquiries the KnockOn effects of what that can do is insane **Karl Hudson:** hi it's car from search room and today I'm joining with me business partner James and we're going to chat about power posts why the industry should be changing their approach on guest post link building and focusing primarily on power post so you know why power post and James what what do you think makes the difference with power posts **James Dooley:** so in my opinion power post are the whole Grail of Link building I think they're the by far the best type of links that you can get and I think the main reason why I think that power posts are the best link is in my opinion the best link that you can get pointing through to your website is placed on a web page that is ranking for the keywords that you want your web page to be ranking for that in my opinion is the best type of link that you can be having um so a power post some people are calling a power post guest posts on steroids um and and fundamentally what it is is that majority of guest posts they're not written to rank they're just 500 words or 1,000 words and what a PO post is is specifically strategically written in a way with the right entities placed on the page to give it the best chances to rank for the keywords that you want it to if it does rank it's also going to be driving not only page rank or link juice through to your website but actual real traffic could even get you conversions some people used to call this parasite SEO but I hate the term parasite SEO like it's not a parasite on somebody else's site if anything in your know this car the guest post Web Master owners love us creating these posts because it strengthens up their website it's definitely not weakening their site in what they do it's actually doing good quality content and generating traffic **Karl Hudson:** so these these guest post owners are absolutely loving the fact that you can write good quality content so what we try to do with obviously ours is we're trying to we what a lot of people don't get is there's a lot of research that then goes into that so I've not not only doing the NLP entities and the whole optimization of articles but then we also are looking into the website and you know seeing if they have the best it it could be a dr10 website it could be a dr60 website it doesn't matter to us what we're doing is looking at their Linkin patterns and then seeing what does that website have the best chance of ranking with this post and will it benefit that the user the owner of that website in having it ranking so obviously Sometimes some Industries actually it's not it's it's not the best to do power P because there might be actually really tough to rank in those Industries or there's just not many guest PSE providers in that industry that will allow you to post on the site so you know but nine times out of 10 there is some out there that we're able to get and the results to be fair it's usually within you know two weeks you've got rankings there you know first page rankings it's really really impressive I think I think the big part of it is there's no guarantees on ranking a power post but we do everything strategically we can to do good quality content then the next part as well as it not just being like 500 words we write good quality content the next big bit is we'll go and do five tier 2 Bat links **James Dooley:** I'm sick and tired of people being obsessed with Dr of a website right and not looking a link is placed on a page not on a domain right it needs page level power not domain level power page level power so the five tier 2 back links strengthen and make that page a lot more authorative and have a lot more power that can pass more link juice through but it also gives it again better chances of ranking in Google what's your thoughts then on the tier 2 back links that power up the power posts **Karl Hudson:** well obviously we've always been an advocate for tier2 links and you know we to the point that we even do it in N edits because obviously it's just jary that yeah like causing the B Google bot to come back revisit a page that might it could be a few years old that page and just doesn't get visit visited frequently enough from the bot so actually it could take you know 6 to eight months for that bot to pick up that there's been an updated link on that page and whereas you know Wii in a new tier2 links and that just seems to trigger a lot more yeah a lot more response from Google I think when it comes to crawling the page so it's definitely something that I think everyone overlooks when it comes to guest posts specifically like literally the the amount of websites we ordered D and out in one of the first and for more strategies I'm looking at as going right what of these links what could I turn into Power posts for the customer um and then obviously trying to explain what a powerpost is obviously has its own battles cuz it's kind of a term that I believe we came up with so it's quite a new term um but yeah essentially you know you mentioned it before it's parasite SEO but not so you know we're not just looking at hemorrhaging the website that it's going on and you know abusing the abusing that website essentially we're looking at how do we add to the the uh web Master's website and actually benefit the users **James Dooley:** and I think the the last part to a powerpost is then the social signals and the engagement factors that come through so there's been quite a few articles that have come out recently saying that people are struggling with index in certain pages and now you got to give enough of a reason to Google just to put a page in the index so with regards to having um social shares traffic and tier twos you're giving it the best chances as well as having a a a well-written article you're giving everything the best chances and behavioral signals and engagement factors to Google for them to want to end up ranking you on page one of Google after that then hopefully I mean obviously we've got a lot of success stories with regards to power posts for clients where now they've been showing us where naturally now they're requiring certain links CU they're they're ranking for the main terms that they want to kind of rank for so not only is it the best type of B links that you can have it's also got so many other benefits with regards to branding online reputation management the amount in know different people that are coming to us now to purchase power posts it's insane and I just think the industry needs to start opening up that little bit more to understand some like we had one the other day that came to us for 50 guest posts and we declined it and said look we you should only do 10 guest posts and 10 power posts and since he ended up getting this was sorry this was a while back but he's ended up changing it again but since he ended up going with it previously with the power posts now he's just like I don't even want guest post anymore cuz I tuna try to try to get my guest post or power post to be earning me money so it can end up sending not just traffic it can bring sales it can bring inquiries the knock on effects of what that can do is insane and it's also you know the the flip side of that it's also mitigating your risk let's face it you know Google's quite gho when it comes to penalties um and if you're getting these power ports on multiple websites and it's all about your brand it's got the brand mention as number one you know you're mitigating the risk of if your website was slapped at some point it shouldn't matter because you've got all of these other websites that are chying to stay in the rankings **Karl Hudson:** yeah exactly that yeah you're diversifying your traffic um signals as well so that that in a nutshell is me where I believe that power posts are the future of Link building and I believe that power posts is the best type of bat link that people can be doing as part of their link building strategies
