What Does “How to grow a renewable energy business? | Renewable Energy Business Lead Generation” Talk About?
This episode of the James Dooley Podcast dives into actionable strategies for growing a renewable energy business, with a particular focus on lead generation and digital marketing. James Dooley and Kasra Dash explore how SEO can build credibility and visibility for renewable energy companies by ranking on Google, Bing, and YouTube, while also emphasizing the importance of trust signals such as accreditations, testimonials, case studies, and awards. They stress that before chasing inquiries, a business must ensure its branded website already convinces visitors of its authority and professionalism.
The conversation moves through the pros and cons of PPC advertising, with Kasra noting that many renewable energy products are so new that search volumes are simply too low to justify Google AdWords spend. James pivots this into a discussion of interruption-based social media advertising on platforms like Facebook, where detailed geographic and demographic targeting can reach business owners within a specific radius. They also explore traditional marketing channels like radio, TV, and billboard advertising, particularly as tools for spreading awareness about local council grants and rebates that many potential customers do not yet know exist.
A central theme throughout is the value of lead generation partnerships, with James explaining that FatRank's model only charges clients for actual conversions rather than raw leads. Both hosts agree that diversifying across multiple lead generation companies is wise, and that the most important metrics are lead volume and return on investment. The episode wraps up by reinforcing that niche positioning, such as branding yourself specifically as a solar panel expert rather than a broad renewable energy company, is key to standing out in a competitive and rapidly evolving market.
“we do a Le generate service which guarantees a return on investment I'll repeat that guarantees a return on investment you don't pay for any leads you only pay for the conversions”
— James Dooley

What Are the Key Takeaways From “How to grow a renewable energy business? | Renewable Energy Business Lead Generation”?
Here are the key points discussed in this episode:
- Niche positioning is essential for renewable energy businesses, as branding yourself specifically as a solar expert rather than a general renewable energy company helps you dominate a focused segment of the market.
- SEO combined with strong trust signals like accreditations, case studies, and testimonials should be the foundation of any renewable energy company's digital presence before pursuing lead generation.
- PPC advertising is often poorly suited to newer renewable energy products because search volumes are too low to justify the expense, making it easy to waste budget on keywords nobody is searching.
- Facebook advertising with geographic and demographic radius targeting offers a cost-effective alternative to billboards and traditional media for reaching local business owners with grant and rebate messaging.
- Partnering with multiple lead generation companies and measuring both lead volume and return on investment is the most scalable and financially safe way to grow a renewable energy business quickly.
“I wouldn't just use fat rank don't throw all your eggs in one basket shop around and try to find a few different lead generation companies and see who gives you the most volume but more importantly who gives you the highest return on investment”
— James Dooley

This episode is worth listening to because it goes beyond generic marketing advice and directly addresses the unique challenges facing renewable energy businesses in today's market. James and Kasra do not simply list tactics but explain the reasoning behind each recommendation, such as why PPC fails for low-search-volume products and why social media interruption marketing can fill that gap. The discussion of local council grants as a marketing angle is particularly insightful, as it shows how businesses can use real financial incentives to make their advertising immediately compelling to both residential and commercial audiences.
What makes this episode especially valuable is the honest, practical conversation about lead generation economics. James openly explains FatRank's conversion-only payment model while simultaneously advising listeners not to rely on any single provider, which builds genuine trust and demonstrates that the goal is helping the business owner succeed rather than just selling a service. For anyone running or advising a renewable energy company, the combination of SEO strategy, paid social guidance, traditional advertising ideas, and lead generation partnership advice makes this a genuinely comprehensive and immediately actionable listen.

What Are Listeners Saying About This Episode?
“Really practical episode that opened my eyes to why our PPC spend on heat pump keywords was going nowhere. The point about Facebook radius targeting for local grant awareness was something we implemented almost immediately and it made a real difference.”
“I loved the emphasis on building trust signals before chasing leads. James makes a compelling case that your website needs to convert visitors first, and that mindset shift alone was worth the listen. The niche positioning advice about being the solar expert rather than a general renewables company was spot on.”
“As someone who runs a small solar installation company, the conversation about partnering with multiple lead generation companies and focusing on ROI rather than just lead volume was genuinely eye-opening. Straightforward, no-fluff advice that I could act on the same day.”

Kasra Dash: so if I want to generate more inquiries for my Renewable Energy company what would you recommend James Dooley: so if you're looking to grow your renewable energy business then I would strongly recommend to start with SEO getting a website put up out there that's ranking in Google search in Bing search but also getting some videos to rank in YouTube and I would make certain that I am getting all the trust signals put on there so what accreditations that I have okay getting testimonials getting case studies and showing your worth of who you are as a business before even you start looking at generating more inquiries I would want to make certain if someone came to my branded website they go we need to use them so obviously there's lots of different types of renewable energy like there like wind turbines solar obviously in the UK by far the biggest and then with regards to with solar panels you could have batteries that kind of power up the batteries and that could be for residential homes offer commercial offices warehouses factories there's a lot there's actually quite some good grants and stuff like that now put in place for solar you've got like tidal renewable energy and stuff like that that's like more in in within the water and hydro renewable energy it's actually one of the biggest growth areas um in the UK and in the US um mainly for decarbonization reasons but I'd say I mean the main one like you said is solar but I would work out as a renewable energy company if you're looking to grow your business where are you going to focus on where do you make your money and then go down that route so is it win turbines is it solar or is it tidle what what is it because if it is s I would potentially start as branding myself as being the s experts not just being renewable energy which is quite broad do you get what I mean so like i' I'd sit down and work out what is it and if it's solar panels and batteries I just concentrate on that with SEO and just hit home to Google mainly because they're the largest search engine in the world this is who we are and this is what we do um we actually working with a lot of renewable energy companies within fat rank MH we do a Le generate service which guarantees a return on investment I'll repeat that guarantees a return on investment you don't pay for any leads you only pay for the conversions so but we are very selective with who we work with we need to make certain you've got a professional email we need to make certain you've got a sales team that the minute that inquiry comes in you'll be responding to that customer either picking up the phone or via email and speaking to them to try to get them to convert and we also want to make certain that your brand presence is good so what I was just talking about then you've got the right accrediations you've got you've maybe won some awards you've got some case studies and stuff like that online so they're the major plays I would do is team up with a lead generation company and do SEO now something else that I would say is with regards to Fat rank I wouldn't just use fat rank don't throw all your eggs in one basket shop around and try to find a few different lead generation companies and see who gives you the most volume but more importantly who gives you the highest return on investment so they're the major two factors there's lots of other stuff like do you think that PPC could work like Google AdWords Kasra Dash: yes and no um so with PPC the the issues that that we've found is obviously first of all it's super expensive but Renewables is quite a or some products in within the renewable space it's very new and there's not many people actually searching it so again that that's the other issue that you've got so sometimes you might be spending money on keywords that people like aren't even searching um so it's kind of you're just hiring a PPC Agency for the for the sake of hiring a PPC agency so James Dooley: so on that if not many people are searching it in Google um which that means obviously you're not going to be getting the clicks then do you think that social media ads could work cuz obviously people aren't searching it on social media ad you're kind of doing Interruption marketing you're getting oh by the way if you was to put this 15,000 solar panels on your house it could save you £110,000 a year type ad so what what I would be looking to do is running awareness style ads and also along with with what you were saying before having a page on it as well cuz if you're the first person to have a page on that specific or let's say you're you're one of the first people to have a page on that specific product or that new service that people might not be aware of then you can definitely rank for it and maintain the ranking positions over time as well so just bear that in mind definitely focus on on your SEO so the next part then you just mentioned that awareness right so renewable energy is evolving all the time right and this is one of the niches that I actually think traditional marketing could do really well because there's lots of different grants available and people in a certain area so let's say you're in Liverpool or Manchester right that specific area could have certain grants from the council that allows them to claim certain money back whether they're a business so commercial solar or whether that they are residential there might be certain grants in place that maybe not gives them the whole solar panels for free but they could contribute a lar some to it now if people don't know about that this is where radio ads or TV ads or billboard advertising could be a play that people are driving down and they see a billboard D saying digal you can get 70% rebate on your solar panels so what was maybe 152,000 for an installation now is only going to be costing you let's say 6,000 and 14,000 coming in as being a gr Kasra Dash: it it's an interesting one because obviously ly traditional advertising you you would assume for something like that could work um and if if you're targeting the Right audience it can definitely work let's let's say for example if there is Council magazine that goes out to all the businesses within your area definitely go go go go and advertise that but with Facebook again going back to the social media ads you can actually set up a radius of let's say 25 Mi of Manchester or 30 Mi of Manchester t getting business owners and then you could again run that style of AD saying did you know you can get 75% off on on your solar panels so on and so forth and the targeting within Facebook ads again it's it's very detailed whereas with billboard ads if it's just on let's say the m6 in Manchester um you're not going to get that many potential business owners D or don't get me wrong you will get business owners but again you're not as detailed targeting when it comes to Facebook James Dooley: yeah that's true yeah so we hope you like the tips of how you'd grow your Renewable Energy company the ma major two plays for me would be SEO from a reputation management and branding point of view and then trying to team up with a lead generation company like fat rank if they can if you do qualify for their lead generation model it's a guaranteed return on investment where you only pay un converted leads get in touch today and see whether your Renewable Energy company could grow using that model make sure to check out the link in the description
